One of the most noteworthy figures among them was Ziryab, a Persian musician driven from the court of Harun ar-Rashid by the jealousy of his teacher. He found a refuge at the Court of Cordova. Ziryab became the unquestioned arbiter of taste and fashion in the Spanish capital, introducing many new and unknown refinements of Eastern civilisation, ranging from the oriental musical modes to wearing fine robes and eating asparagus.
